In this autobiographical graphic novel, Craig Thompson describes his first love, his childhood relationship with his brother, and his loss of faith. They send their children to church camp at Christmas and have a dislike for children who sin. Blankets is the story of a young man coming of age and finding the confidence to express his creative voice. It is set in America and features a family that are very strict Christians, who cannot afford the luxuries of heaven on earth and have a behave now and God will reward you attitude. Thompson lives with his parents and little brother, with whom he shares a bed for much of his childhood. His mother is, according to one of his many bullies, so religious it makes everyone in town sick (p.21). He has no idea how to get what he wants, is unable to maintain a relationship with his brother, and can’t really articulate to Raina why he loves her. From the first page it grasps you with its carefully placed words and has been one of the best books that I have ever read. Blankets is the story of Thompson growing up in a middle working class family with deep religious underpinnings. As such, Craig spends most of the story floating around in his own immaturity, with no plans or goals other than a vague inclination to go to art school. It is the first graphic novel I have ever read and it is mind blowing in the sense of power that it can hold on you.
